Analyze the history, nature, and role of religion in society. Produce new scholarship on world religions. Engage in an open, non-denominational study of the world’s great religious traditions.

Religions are complex systems of spiritual and social engagement that play a major role in the life of communities and individuals. They have both inspired great works of art and literature and they have provided justification for bigotry and violence. Study religion and appreciate the complex ways in which human beings have negotiated their social, economic, environmental, existential and cultural situations, values and ideals.

It is essential for us as Canadians and world citizens to know about the variety of religions that exist in our cultural landscape so that we are able to reflect in an informed and critical manner upon the role that religion plays in human life. This informed insight will increase your ability to understand the issues concerning religion that arise in our society and the world.
